About WMI Codes

WMI Codes is an independent reference to the manufacturer codes at the start of every VIN. It is run by Wyatt Henderson.

The site turns NHTSA's public vPIC database into one page per significant code and manufacturer, hubs by country, vehicle class and first character, and a VIN checker that reads the manufacturer code, the model-year character and the check digit. The aim is to answer a simple question well: whose code is this, and what does NHTSA know about it?

Sources

All data comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Product Information Catalog and Vehicle Listing (vPIC), October 2026 release, a U.S. Government work in the public domain. VIN rules follow 49 CFR Part 565. Details are on How the catalog is read.

What the site does not do

It does not look up individual vehicles, owners, titles, accidents or theft records, and it keeps no VINs. It gives no buying, legal or safety advice. It is not affiliated with NHTSA or with any manufacturer.
